Dr John Mackellar has been a GP since 1969 and, like many GPs, has enjoyed a wide spectrum of clinical practice.

His background in immunisation led to his interest in travel medicine, which has developed over the years to the point where, together with colleague Olga Ilic, the service provided in Mooroopna and Shepparton is now the regional centre of excellence. Both doctors hold certificates from the International Society of Travel Medicine. John lectures in Travel Medicine to students at the Department of Rural Health, University of Melbourne and to local doctors.

Dr Mackellar has also had a long interest in the needs of people affected by alcohol and other drugs. Acutely aware of the relationship between a difficult childhood, adolescent mental health problems and a life controlled by the false support of prescribed and illicit drugs, he is a strong advocate for the needs of the new mother and her children. Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley are noted for the absence of support for new mothers and the total lack of support for, or any interest in, those affected by drugs.
